90-Degree Optical Hybrid
-
Six-port hybrid devices have been used for microwave and millimeter-wave detection systems since the mid-1990s and are a key component for coherent receivers. In principle, the six-port device consists of linear dividers and combiners interconnected in such a way that four different vectorial additions of a reference signal (LO) and the signal to be detected are obtained. The levels of the four output signals are detected by balanced receivers. By applying suitable baseband signal processing algorithms, the amplitude and phase of the unknown signal can be determined.

90deg Hybrid With Balanced Receiver
-
This page describes one of Optoplex's innovated products, a 90deg optical hybrid integrated with balanced photo-receivers, which can be used in optical sensing applications, particularly the coherent Doppler wind LIDAR (light detection and ranging). Coherent detection has been widely found in applications for RF and optical communications. In the past few years, coherent technology has been advanced dramatically in high-speed optical communications. With this advancement, key parts and components are commercially available and cost-effective for many applications beyond telecommunications, such as narrow linewidth lasers, optical hybrid, balanced photo-receivers, and DSP, etc.

Tunable Edge Filters
-
Tunable edge filter is a customized product. It usually belongs to 2-port optical tunable filter product platform. Instead of using narrow bandpass filter in the 2-port tunable optical filter, the tunable edge filter utilizes a low-pass or long-pass interference filter. By changing the incident angle of the light beam, the cut-off wavelength will be tuned. Standard Tunable edge filters support C-band or L-band wavelength range.

Standard Optical Interleaver
-
An innovative technique for expanding the number of channels per fiber involves an optical device, called an optical interleaver. For example, in most DWDM equipment, the standard channel spacing is 100 GHz. But spacing the signal-carrying frequencies every 50 or even 25 GHz can double or even quadruple the number of channels per fiber. This job is accomplished by an optical interleaver. Such a device takes two multiplexed signals with 100-GHz spacing and interleaves them, creating a DWDM signal with channels spaced 50 GHz apart. The process can be repeated, creating even denser composite signals with 25-GHz or 12.5-GHz spacing. The signals at the receiving end are recovered with the same devices used as splitters or optical de-interleavers. Thus, devices and/or networks can be upgraded without requiring that all devices be upgraded, or network bandwidth can be increased.

Coherent detection has been found increasing applications in fiber sensing as well as in conventional RF and optical communications. In the past several years, coherent technology has been advanced dramatically in high-speed optical communications. With this, key parts and components (such as narrow linewidth lasers, optical hybrid, balanced photo-receivers and DSP, etc.) are commercially available and cost-effective for many applications beyond telecommunications.

100Gb/s Coherent Receiver
-
The integrated 100-Gb/s DP-QPSK receiver incorporates two 90° optical hybrids with four pairs of balanced photodetector (PD) and four linear TIAs into a single butterfly package. Unlike other technologies in which the polarization beam splitter (PBS) and/or the power splitter (BS) are not included, Optoplex’s receiver includes both of them with the optical hybrids, PDs and the TIAs to offer a fully integrated solution which will benefit users in terms of completely removing fiber routing and the skew management. The integrated receivers work at the symbol rate up to 32GBaud/s.

OSA - OEM Modules
-
Optoplex’s near-infrared optical spectrum analyzer module (NIR OSA) is a high performance optical spectral engine for Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Fiber Optic Test Equipment (FOTE) applications. Based on proprietary technologies, Optoplex’s OSA module offers much higher spectral resolution capability than those available in the market, which is demanding in today’s increasing spectroscopy applications. Other features include: compact, light-weight, low power consumption and wide wavelength coverage. Optoplex’s compact OSA engines are suitable for a variety of handheld, portable, bench-top and inline OSA/spectrometer applications.

2x4 QPSK Mixer
-
Optoplex's 2X4 polarization diversified optical hybrid (aka QPSK Mixer) is a 2x4 device, which mixes an incoming signal with a local oscillator. The 4 outputs of this device are connected to 4 single-ended detectors (see the function diagram below). The device features a monolithic optical core integrating a PBS with an interferometer which is also widely used in Optoplex's interleaver and DPSK-demodulator platforms. This device is athermal, colorless, data-rate independent, compact in size and designed for manufacturability. This platform can also be extended to a 2X8 polarization diversified hybrid to incorporate with 4 pairs of balanced detectors.

Bandwidth-Tunable Filters
-
Through cascading a low-pass tunable edge filter with a long-pass tunable edge filter, one can achieve a new type of bandwidth-tunable filter whose passband width is variable while its center wavelength is still tunable. With such a device, you can

40Gb/s DQPSK Receiver
-
The integrated DQPSK receiver incorporates an optical phase demodulator (delay-line interferometer or DLI) with 2 pairs of balanced photo-diodes and 2 linear TIAs into a single butterfly package. Compared with the currently available discrete solution in which a separate DLI and a separate receiver are used, the integrated DQPSK receiver eliminates labor intensive fiber routing and coupling (between the DLI and the balanced receiver) as well as the skew control. Moreover, the integrated DQPSK receiver offers a smaller footprint suitable for today’s demanding high speed transponder applications.

2x8 QPSK Mixer
-
To be used for optical coherent detection such as DP-QPSK receivers, Optoplex’s ten-port 2x8 Coherent Mixer (aka QPSK mixer) combines the incoming signal with a local oscillator to generate eight light states in the complex-field space. The eight light output signals can then be coupled into four pairs of balanced detectors. The block diagram below shows the application of a 2x8 coherent mixer in a DP-QPSK receiver. Since the mixing process is data rate independent, the devices can be used for any data rate in applications such as 40Gb/s or 100Gb/s transmission systems.

DPSK Demodulator
-
Optical differential-phase shift keying (DPSK) provides a desired modulation format that offers high receiver sensitivity, high tolerance to major nonlinear effects in high-speed transmissions, and high tolerance to coherent crosstalk. In DPSK, data information is carried by the optical phase difference between adjacent bits. For direct detection of DPSK signal (by conventional intensity detectors), a DPSK demodulator is needed to convert the phase-coded signal into an intensity-coded signal.

Switchable Optical Interleaver
-
In a switchable interleaver, there are two operation modes: *Mode A: All pass *Mode B: InterleaverIn Mode A, the system operates at any channel spacing, in which all channels pass through the device and output from one of the two output ports as if there is no extra device inserted. When the system is switched to Mode B, the device operates as a normal optical interleaver, such 50-100GHz interleaver. The working principle is schematically shown below. In Mode B, the device could be a standard symmetric interleaver, or an asymmetric interleaver. Channel spacings are not limitted to 50-100GHz. They can be any frequency pair: between N-GHz and 2N-GHz.

Asymmetric Optical Interleaver
-
Conventional Optical Interleaver is Symmetric Optical Interleaver. By "Symmetric" we mean that both "Odd" and "Even" channels have the same passband widths and waveforms. Optoplex offers a new type of Optical Interleaver whose "Odd" and "Even" channels have different passband widths and waveforms. This is FlexSlicer™ Asymmetric Optical Interleaver.
