Multi Channel Optical Fibre Verification
The multi-channel optical fibre test system is used in the development and qualification of single mode optical fibres. The fibres are exposed to environmental influences in a climatic chamber in order to analyse the data on insertion loss and reflection. In addition, the current temperature in the climatic chamber is documented. Insertion loss measurement is performed with the help of an optical power meter, laser sources and optical switches. An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) from Exfo is used for the reflection measurements. The system was designed for the simultaneous characterization of 15 sample fibres and one reference fibre.

Thorlabs' LLD1530 Frequency-Locked Laser is a narrow linewidth, DFB-laser-diode-based, turnkey system with a vacuum emission wavelength of 1532.8323 nm and a high SMSR of at least 35 dB. The laser frequency is actively stabilized to a National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)-traceable molecular transition of acetylene and has an absolute accuracy at start-up that is better than ±25 MHz. The emission frequency immediately after start-up is then maintained with a ±25 MHz stability, providing an overall frequency accuracy of ±50 MHz. The LLD1530 is an accurate frequency reference designed to provide low-noise laser emission with excellent frequency stability, accuracy, and precision immediately at start-up. This source is ideal for use in demanding FTIR instrumentation, instrument calibration, gas sensing, and coherent telecommunications applications.

The Lumistar LS-27-B Modular Dual Channel Tri-Band Tracking and Data Receiver is Lumistar’s third generation of modular high performance FM Receivers. This wideband designs supports one or two independent channels of PCM with data rates up to 20Mbps. The unit includes both an optional FM demodulated output for PCM data, and standard programmable AM/linear AGC outputs for auto-tracking receivers. The design offers 8 IF Bandwidths and 8 Video Filters per channel for each receiver.AC coupling with a low pass filter is employed to ensure a high quality data link with long strings of NRZ-L ones or zeroes. The unit provides a software selectable 10 MHz reference I/O port forlocking local oscillators to a high precision external source or to arrange multiple units in a master/slave arrangement. The receiver’s control and status is achieved via Ethernet, USB or auto-switched RS-232 (or “4-wire” RS-485 in place of 232). This Hardy Shaker provides the ability to set the amplitude and change the frequency range without the amplitude changing. This automation makes conducting a test easier. A test can be conducted on a vibration transducer and manually recorded. Multiple tests are not saved; for multiple tests use the HI-903 or HI-803 units. The HI-913 is used for testing from 7 to 10,000 Hz, it offers adjustable frequency and vibration levels. This provides a reference source for verifying the accuracy of vibration transducers, connectors, cabling and instruments or instrumentation systems. The HI-913 has a ruggedized suspension system that can support heavy transducers (up to 800 grams - see frequency limits in the manual). The HI-913 has a built-in battery charger that can operate on 120 or 240 VAC. The unit comes in a rugged Pelican case.

Primary Standards
Primary standards (often also referred to as mechanical dead-weight testers, pressure balances or primary pressure standards) are the most accurate reference instruments for pressure. Their functional principle is based on the physical principle of pressure = force/area. Mass pieces placed on the top of a piston-cylinder system are the source of a precisely defined force. By producing a certain (counter) pressure inside the primary standard an equilibrium is achieved: the mass pieces, including the free-running piston of the piston-cylinder system, are floating, which will lead to a very accurate pressure at the test port which measured through piston gauge technology.
