In cases where traction is less than ideal, a vehicle may be designed to improve stability and traction at the expense of power. This means adding torque to a spinning wheel or retarding of timing. In order to properly test an AWD vehicle for peak performance, an AWD chassis dynamometer must be able to simulate ideal road-load conditions to the vehicle. This approach allows the vehicle to be evaluated under "optimum" operational conditions; whereby torque is distributed to the vehicle's tires in the same manner that would normally occur when a vehicle has equal traction at all four drive wheels, and is therefore operating at peak efficiency.

The test system cluster architecture is based on dual CPU or 4-CPU PCs acting as cluster nodes. The nodes communicate and synchronise over a high-speed network (Myrinet or InfiniBand). A modification of the Linux operating system allows to run the test execution and evaluation algorithms in hard real-time on reserved CPUs, where scheduling is non-preemptive and controlled by the test system itself. The interrupts caused by interfaces to the system under test may be relayed to CPUs designated explicitly for their handling. This approach offers the opportunity to utilise high-performance standard hardware and the services provided by the widely accepted Linux operating system in combination with all mechanisms required for hard real-time computing. The cluster architecture presents an opportunity to distribute interfaces with high data throughput on different nodes, so that PCI bus overload can be avoided. In addition, the CPU load can be balanced by allocating test data generators, environment simulations and checkers for the behaviour of the system under test ("test oracles") on dedicated CPUs.

The LISST-DEEP instrument obtains in-situ measurements of particle size distribution, optical transmission, and the optical volume scattering function (VSF). Using a red 670nm diode laser and a custom silicon detector, small-angle scattering from suspended particles is sensed at 32 specific log-spaced angle ranges. This measurement is post-processed to obtain sediment size distribution, volume concentration, optical transmission, and VSF. The electronics and optical configuration in the LISST-DEEP are very similar to Sequoia’s workhorse, the LISST- 100X. However, because of the extreme difficulty associated with keepingalignment under high pressure, the LISSTDEEP hardware design is radically different from the LISST-100X. This allows the LISST-DEEP to be deployed down to 3000 m and obtain reliable measurements of the in situ particle size distribution and volume concentration in waters with optical transmission up to 98.5%.
