Frequency counter models can be direct or reciprocal counters. Direct counting models count signal cycles for a specified period, called the gate time, and resolution is in Hertz. Reciprocal counters provide faster, higher resolution performance, with resolution listed is in digits/second. When shopping for a counter, remember to review resolution and accuracy as separate specifications. The resolution of a frequency counter is the smallest change it will detect between closely spaced frequencies.

Timers count pulses generated by an internal or external clock and are used to measure elapsed time, or to establish the length of the counting period.
