Broadband Fiber Optic Light Sources
ASE Sources
Broadband fiber optic light sources utilize amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) within optically pumped rare earth-doped fibers. The spectral width of such light sources can be set by the developer in a range from a few nm to the full width of the emission spectrum of the active ion (e.g. erbium ion).

Pulsed Fiber Amplifier
MOPA
These light sources are compact Master Oscillator - Power Amplifier (MOPA) structures that can be directly modulated in a defined operating range of repetition frequency and pulse power. The standard products operate in the wavelength range around 1.5 µm at a repetition frequency > 6 kHz and a pulse energy of 10 µJ/50 ns (200 W peak power).

Laser Diode Driver
Fibotec offers special laser diode drivers, especially versions that accommodate laser diodes via integrated terminal bases. Two standard products for different applications accommodate laser diodes in butterfly packages with up to 2 A forward current. The "Pump Laser Pinout" is standard. Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier
EDFA
EDFAs are based on the light amplification in erbium-doped fiber, which are optically pumped by means of 980 nm or 1480 nm light sources. In this way, the light of a larger wavelength within the C or L band applied to the input of the amplifier is amplified, thus widening the range of optical communication links. EDFAs typically operate in saturation and the average signal power determines the average gain. The dynamics of EDFA are unaffected by the sequence and dynamics of a digital signal or channel interaction in DWDM systems. As a result, multiple channels can be bundled within the total erbium spectral amplification bandwidth. However, the total average output power in both cases is determined by the saturation power of the specific EDFA.

Spectral Single-Mode Diode Laser
The diode lasers are compact, single-mode light sources with a spectral width in the sub-MHz range (cw). A modulation input is optional. The wavelength for standard products is in the range 1530nm-1565nm (other wavelength can be tested).

dB Meter
The dB meter is used to determine the stability or fluctuations of the optical power over a large dynamic range with high accuracy and measurement speed. A fiber-coupled, power-stabilized 1.55µm laser diode is built into the device to enable simple and quick testing of passive fiber optic components or local fiber loops. Alternatively, light from external light sources in the wavelength range 780nm-1650nm can also be used.

Fibolocator
Fibolocator is an innovative device for measuring and characterizing breaks and other backscattering-causing faults in optical fibers. Time-resolved correlation reflectometry is the principle on which the device is based. It analyzes the backscattered light like a pulse OTDR, but unlike such OTDRs, cw laser diodes are used. The requirements for the test signal and the complexity of the system are low, which leads to very low costs for OEM subsystems.
