The ColorPAL is a miniature color and light sensor which, through its RGB LED, doubles as a color generator. For sensing color, the ColorPAL uses its LED to illuminate a sample, one color component at a time, along with a broad-spectrum light-to-voltage converter to measure the light reflected back. The amount of light reflected from the sample under illumination from each red, green, and blue LED can be used to determine the sample’s color. The ColorPAL works with non-fluorescent reflective surfaces, preferably those in contact with its light shroud.

5-Position Switch

The 5-Position Switch is a normally open contact switch. It has a nice snappy feel, and returns to the center/un-pressed position immediately when it is released. By monitoring the input state of five pins, it’s easy for any Parallax microcontroller to detect whether the switch is in the up, down, left, right, or pressed position. It is possible for more than one position to make contact at a time, such as pressed+right, left+down, or pressed+right+down, for a total of 18 output states.

The DS18B20 digital thermometer is a high-resolution (9-bit to 12-bit) Celsius temperature sensor with a built-in alarm and user-programmable alarm level. The sensor uses a 1-Wire bus that requires data, power and ground. Each sensor has a unique ID, allowing them to be configured and identified on the same bus. Distributed machines, buildings, and process control are common applications. This sensor was brought into Parallax inventory for use in the P2 Quick Byte series as a demonstration device for the 1-Wire Object. This part is easily wired into a breadboard, too.

The Bosch Sensortec BME680 Integrated Environmental Unit combines a gas sensor with air pressure, humidity, and ambient air temperature sensing functions within a single package for high performance air quality measurement. Parallax Inc. places the BME680 on a compact PCB with a 6-pin male header. This capable sensor does not have to be difficult to use. The X-Band Motion Detector’s sensor is a common component in security systems and automatic door openers and can detect movements within a room, yard, or even on the other side of a wall. The X-Band Motion Detector operates in the X-band frequency, at 10.525 GHz and indicates detected movements with oscillations in its high/low output. Sensitivity is manually adjustable with a potentiometer, offering direct line of sight detection from roughly 8 to slightly over 30 ft (~2.4 to 9+ m).

The Altimeter Module MS5607 is a high resolution (20 cm) electronic altimeter sensor that gives highly accurate altitude, pressure, and temperature readings. The module includes a high-linearity barometric pressure sensor and a high-resolution temperature output, allowing implementation of an altimeter/thermometer without any additional sensors. Different operation modes allow the user to optimize for conversion speed or current consumption. The module is designed for use with a large variety of microcontrollers with different voltage requirements. This module is well-suited for high-altitude ballooning and has been used with great success in that role.
